England must drop two players as Maguire excels in USA draw

England and the USA drew 0-0 in Friday’s World Cup clash at the Al Bayt Stadium. The Three Lions had entered the game hoping to build on their 6-2 win over Iran earlier in the week. But that didn’t happen, and Express Sport will now look at four things we learned from the matchup.

Mount and Sterling need to drop

There is no denying that Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling are two great footballers. They deserve to be in the England squad, even if their form for Chelsea has been iffy this season.

But they were poor for the Three Lions on Friday night and while their selection is understandable, it is time for Gareth Southgate to gamble and give other players a chance.

Perhaps switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation would benefit England, with the addition of Phil Foden.

Foden would be useful at number 10, particularly with England struggling to create chances for their forwards, while Marcus Rashford looks like the perfect replacement for Sterling.

Rashford is a fit man and while Sterling scored against Iran, the Chelsea star is not.

Harry Maguire a bright spark

While England were poor up front against the USA, they were good at back, despite the Yankees threatening at times.

And it was another good day in the office for Harry Maguire, with the Manchester United star leading with authority and getting his team out of some sticky situations.

He won three straight headers during the second half, at a time when England were under guardianship.

And it’s certainly remarkable to see how different he is for his country rather than his club, having worked hard at United for the past 12 months.

There weren’t too many positives from tonight’s game, but Maguire was the biggest of all.

Southgate slow with subs

Southgate trusts its players. That’s something he’s made clear time and time again, ever since he took Sam Allardyce’s job.

But when it comes to making substitutions, he can sometimes be too slow.

This was another one of those nights. England really should have played their team at half time, with the USA coming out on top for long stretches of the game in Qatar.

It is not the first time that this accusation has been thrown at Southgate.

He also came too late when it came to making substitutions in the Euro final last summer, something that cost his team when the likes of Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho all missed from the penalty spot.

It Takes Patience by Jude Bellingham

Much has been said and written about Jude Bellingham after his sensational performance against Iran.

But the Borussia Dortmund star crashed to earth again, putting on a flat display on a forgettable night as his team battled to defeat the USA.

Bellingham, however, deserves patience. Just because he didn’t have the best of games tonight doesn’t mean he should be criticized.

It’s obvious the talent is there, which is why the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Manchester City are keen to secure his signature.

Bellingham is unlikely to let tonight get to him and it is still expected to start when the Three Lions take on Wales on Tuesday. Wales are almost out of the tournament, having lost 2-0 to Iran today.
