England in awkward position over bracelet row as Denmark’s Kjaer speaks

Denmark captain Simon Kjaer has insisted it is “fine” to risk a yellow card for wearing the OneLove armband at the World Cup as England’s dispute with FIFA continues. The FA may back down in its fight against world soccer’s governing body after being warned it could face sporting sanctions if Harry Kane wears the armband against Iran on Monday.

The Football Association may be forced to backtrack on its ongoing dispute with FIFA over the OneLove armband, having revealed its intention to wear it in September. FA CEO Mark Bullingham has admitted they may need to explore alternative ways of marking their support for inclusion if FIFA complies with the sporting sanctions.

But while the Three Lions are considering an escalation, Denmark captain Kjaer has boldly suggested that he would happily receive a booking in a World Cup match for wearing the armband.

Discussing the issue at a news conference on Monday, he told reporters: “I’m fine with that,” referring to picking up a reserve if it means wearing the captain’s armband as intended.

The OneLove bracelet was designed to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, with illegal same-sex relationships in Qatar and punishments including jail time.

Wales, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland were also expected to show support for marginalized communities while competing in a Gulf state. However, FIFA’s threats of punishment through “sporting sanctions” have apparently prompted a last-minute U-turn.

The Netherlands has officially withdrawn from the fray, which could encourage other nations to take a similar stance.
