Despite his enormous talent and prominent role with Manchester City, Foden only has 19 caps under his name. And Southgate’s latest indifference to the 22-year-old will only fuel further speculation about his role in the dugout.
Asked for his explanation as to why Foden was left out of the starting XI, Southgate said: “We thought it was the right thing to do to keep the team from the start, then the wide players we picked with Jack [Grealish] and marcus [Rashford] ahead of Phil (Foden) for changes.
“Jack can keep the ball well for us and help us upfield, we thought Marcus’ speed would also be a threat for the latter part of the game.”
England now face Wales on Tuesday with qualification on the line for the winning side, meaning Southgate’s side could still return home from Qatar if results against them are unlikely.
