England fans in violent clashes with Wales at the World Cup in Tenerife

The fights came on the day of a disappointing performance by England against the United States. Wales’ chances of reaching the knockout rounds were dealt a severe blow several hours earlier.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions held to a goalless draw with the Americans but remain top of Group B thanks to their 6-2 win over Iran last week. Wales were beaten 2-0 by Iran and must now beat England on Tuesday to have any chance of reaching the round of 16.

Rob Page’s team was bad against Iran and deserved to lose. But both Iranian goals came within nine minutes of second-half injury time. Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off for a vicious kung-fu kick on striker Mehdi Taremi.

Tensions between English and Welsh fans will be a concern for the authorities with high stakes in Tuesday’s Group B clash between the two teams. England need a win to ensure they finish top of the group and have a chance of an easier tie in the first knockout round. Wales need to win, while a three-goal win could sensationally knock England out of the tournament.
