England boss Gareth Southgate ‘could play Phil Foden at left-back’

England boss Gareth Southgate has been told to unleash Phil Foden in the final Three Lions World Cup group game against Wales, and Gabby Agbonlahor reckons he would even “make a good work” in an unorthodox role as a left-back. The head coach had second thoughts when he opted not to take the Manchester City man off the bench when his team drew 0-0 with the USA on Friday.

Most of the post-match talking points revolved around Foden and how, despite being a key member of Pep Guardiola’s side, he played just 19 minutes in Qatar. Former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor is hoping to see Foden against Wales, and has advised Southgate to pair him up with Jack Grealish.

“Phil Foden could play anywhere,” Agbonlahor said. talk sport. “You could play him left back if you wanted to, or right back and he would do a good job. He has that talent, you’ve seen him at Manchester City, he can play on the left or the right, but he moves like all players.

“He has that rotation in him. bring it [vs USA]you could have had [Jordan] Henderson and [Declan] Rice sitting down, and Foden coming for [Mason] Mount. So the next game against Wales, I feel like Southgate has to unleash Phil Foden, ‘Go ahead, this is your chance.’ Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, come out. I would play both. I would play Jack on the left and Phil Foden on the right.”
