Empire of Light hit theaters in late 2022 and is still available to watch in theaters across the country. But viewers may be interested to know where the emotionally charged movie was originally filmed, as it takes place in the actual town of Margate in Kent, England. But is that where the movie was actually shot?
Where was Empire of Light filmed?
Empire of Light was shot in Margate, Kent, in the UK.
The events of the movie take place in the locations where they actually took place, making it one of the rare movies that fans will get to see where it all happened in person.
Micheal Ward and Colin Firth are joined in the picture by Olivia Colman, who plays Hilary Small in the film, an on-call manager at the fictional “Empire” movie theater. While the interior of the cinema was filmed in a Margate cinema, the exterior of the building was filmed elsewhere.
The exterior shots of the fictional cinema were actually the exterior of Dreamland, an amusement park in Margate that includes a Ferris wheel, arcades and more.
Mendes, who previously directed the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, as well as 1917, said he “was drawn to this particular location because it offered so many opportunities on the scale of the visual landscape.”
The British director went on to say that Margate “was where JMW Turner painted most of his famous paintings”. He added: “It was there because he said the skies were the best in Europe. It’s where TS Eliot wrote Waste Land, sitting in a shelter just outside the cinema overlooking the beach and the gray sea beyond. There is a spaciousness to the place, which gives it poetry and a cinematic scope”.
Empire of Light received mixed reviews, including two stars from The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey, who called the picture “a strangely impersonal love story”.
Despite her mixed reaction, Colman was nominated for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama Award at this year’s 80th Golden Globe Awards.
Empire of Light is already in theaters.
