Elvis Presley’s Graceland was the King’s playground. Since the star couldn’t walk in public without being seen, he made the most of the grounds of his Memphis mansion. He famously drove golf carts, as did his security team and his daughter Lisa Marie Presley. His father gave him a personal one for his last Christmas in 1976. The vehicle originally had a roof, but his childhood friend would be responsible for removing it just a few days after first using it.
Danny Smith is the son of Memphis mob member Billy Smith, Elvis’ first cousin, and grew up in Graceland with the King’s daughter.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he was asked if Lisa’s golf cart ever had a top. He replied, “Yes, when Elvis first bought Lisa’s golf cart, it had a roof and a windshield. It was a few days, a week after she got it, we were riding in it, and she was actually letting me drive it. She was driving and I turned very sharply and being three wheeled machines they kicked to the side or flipped over. And I actually flipped it over and it started flipping over and it fell into a big tree and it bent the roof really bad and broke the windshield.”
The Memphis Mafia Kid was terrified of what Elvis would do with the news and knew he wouldn’t be happy.
Lisa would agree if they let her take a picture of them first, but then she would drive off with her camera in the golf cart. Sometimes she and her childhood friends from the Memphis mob would fill the vehicle with large green walnuts and then throw them at the fans, but luckily no one was hurt. Even as Elvis’s daughter visits Graceland with her family today, she still enjoys riding golf carts with them. Although the Memphis mansion has been a museum since 1982, it is still a home to her.
