Tonight at 8:35pm on BBC Two, Ed Sheeran on BBC airs, showing some behind-the-scenes details of the Shape of You singer’s life and career. However, one key detail about his love life may not be explored on the show. In 2014, Ed released the song “Don’t” from his album Multiply, and it told the story of a short-lived relationship he experienced with Ellie Goulding.
At the time, both Ed and Ellie were huge UK pop stars who toured frequently and had dozens of top ten hits to their credit.
However, after a few dates, it was said that Ellie stopped talking to Ed before she started dating One Direction star Niall Horan.
Ed reflected on this “betrayal” in the lyrics of Don’t. They raged: “And I never saw him as a threat (you b*****) / Until you disappeared with him to have sex, of course / Not that we were both on tour / We were on the same page.” Damn hotel floor / And I wasn’t looking for a promise or a commitment / But it was never just fun, and I thought you were different.”
The truth really came out when Ed spoke candidly about the relationship years later.
In 2013, Ed pointed out something curious about his relationship with Ellie. He said, “I mean, normal people don’t hold hands if they’re just friends.”
He later confirmed that the lyrics were absolutely real, but he never mentioned Ellie by name.
He said: “Don’t is just a song that’s close to the bone and it definitely opened a door that probably shouldn’t have opened. I just won’t say who it is because… I mean everyone, everyone f***ing he knows anyway. But I won’t say who it is because it’s a pretty negative song.”
While he wanted to protect the identity of everyone involved in the relationship mix-up, he insisted he was right.

Ellie later spoke about the relationship, but her story differed from Ed’s.
She confirmed that she had dated the One Direction star, but was less forthcoming about the details of her relationship with Ed.
She said: “I had a few dates with Niall, but I never had a relationship with Ed.”
The singer added: “I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it became such a big thing.”
Niall has never spoken publicly about the alleged feud between him, Ed and Ellie, but he did speak out about the A-Team singer in 2017.
At that time he made an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he confirmed that he had gone out drinking with Ed after a concert.
He then delighted fans with a story of how Ed ended up wearing his hockey jersey while out at a bar. As a result, it seems that their relationship has not been tarnished in any way.
