Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol Review –

Set in East Tennessee in the 1930s, Dolly’s Dickens follows Scrooge’s story quite closely.

Sung almost entirely, the piece depends on the songs, and aside from one or two standouts, Appalachian Snowfall in particular, most of them are generic Dolly and more sentimental than usual.

The quiet setting of the Queen Elizabeth Hall is serviceable rather than sympathetic with a piece that cries out for atmosphere and, though the cast and musicians work hard, it’s only intermittently entertaining.

As the Ghost from the Future, excellent violinist Corey Wickens brings a sense of otherworldly menace.

A little more than that wouldn’t have gone amiss.
