Disney’s new CGI-animated film, Strange World, which cost $180 million to make, will lose at least $100 million after failing to earn even $20 million in its opening Thanksgiving weekend.
The studio, which in recent years has opted for direct-to-Disney+ releases for Pixar films Luca and Turning Red, has faced criticism from some fans over the new film, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal.
The film about a family of explorers has been accused of trying to educate children about sexual preferences through Jaboukie Young-White’s gay lead character and his teenage romance.
Many on social media have claimed that the film is an example of “wake up, screw up”. A similar accusation was made of Pixar’s Lightyear, a Disney children’s film that featured a lesbian kissing scene.
