David Beckham ripped apart by LGBTQ+ activist for supporting the World Cup

David Beckham has been ripped apart by LGBTQ+ activist Peter Tatchell for supporting the World Cup in Qatar. Beckham has accepted a 10-year role as ambassador for the tournament, which will reportedly net him £150m.

Beckham, who capped 388 times for Manchester United and made 115 appearances for England, has become one of the most famous people on the planet. But Tatchell says the blockbuster star has irreversibly tarnished his reputation and he should no longer be considered an LGBTQ+ icon.

“What is really shameful is that celebrities are being bought by the millions by Qatar to put a positive spin on what is a sexist, homophobic and racist dictatorship,” Tatchell told GB News Breakfast.

“How can David Beckham, Robbie Williams and all these other big stars performing in Qatar, how can they have a clear conscience when they know what this regime is doing to people? I think it will cause them great harm. I mean, David Beckham was a great LGBT person, but no more. His reputation is seriously damaged.

“Standard procedure in Qatar is that anyone known to be gay or even suspected or perceived to be gay can be arrested and questioned on the street, on the subway or in the mall. That’s how bad it is. So LGBT+ fans will be at risk.

“Now the Qatari authorities say they are going to adopt a live and let live attitude, but they have broken so many promises. They have not followed through on their promises of better conditions for migrant workers or only partially. They have just broken their promise to allow beer to be served and consumed in stadiums and fan areas.

“So just ask yourself, can we really trust these people? This is a police state, this is a dictatorship. I don’t think we can trust the guarantees, so I’m worried about what might happen to LGBT+ fans.”
