Creed 3 Star Michael B. Jordan Details Sylvester Stallone’s Absence

Adonis Creed fans are thrilled that Creed 3 hits theaters today, but it’s a bittersweet movie. This is the first time that Rocky Balboa has not been a part of history. Sylvester Stallone played the underdog in six movies over the span of 30 years before entering the Creed franchise twice. Although Stallone’s absence from Creed 3 has been a mystery until now, Adonis Creed star Michael B Jordan has now opened up about what goes on behind the scenes.

Jordan explained, “I want Adonis to stand on his own two feet. To do that, we had to go back in time.” Creed 3 focuses on Adonis reuniting with his childhood friend Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who has a bone to discuss with him after decades away. The two characters considered themselves “brothers” and some bad blood has now led to a brutal boxing match.

“What were those transformative years?” Jordan mused. “Those childhood traumas that shaped [Adonis] today? I think the space for this story was really about Adonis Creed moving on with his family and keeping him going. That’s how we developed the story for this one.”

He then added that Stallone’s presence will always be ingrained in the Creed series, even if he’s not on screen.

“Sly and Rocky’s DNA runs through this entire franchise,” Jordan told the HOT97 podcast. “You can’t have these movies [without that]. That underdog spirit, I think, connects to the underdog in all of us. I think what we love most about these movies is that we see someone who is going through difficulties, who is able to rise from the ashes and reach the top of the mountain, and we connect with that.”

Jordan, who is making his directorial debut with Creed 3, noted that he wanted the film to “stand on the shoulders of Adonis” rather than lean on Rocky. “For us,” he continued. “We connect with characters who can do the same, and that’s what we want to do with Adonis Creed.”

While Jordan’s politicized response gave a brief insight into Stallone’s absence, the actor himself previously called out Creed’s bosses for being “vampires.”

Stallone posted a painting of Rocky being attacked by a vampire along with a tirade on Instagram last year. He said: “A very flattering portrait of the great Rocky/Creed producer Irwin Winkler, one of the greatest in the country. After Irwin controlled Rocky for over 47 years, and now Creed, I would really like to have the minus a little bit of [of] WHAT IS LEFT of my rights back, before giving it ONLY TO HIS CHILDREN – I think it would be a fair gesture from this 93 year old gentleman?” (sic)

He added: “This is a sore track that eats at my soul, because I wanted to leave some Rocky behind for my kids, but it’s always good to hear from the loyal fans…Keep thumping.”

Shortly after, Stallone was interviewed by Variety, to whom she told, “I don’t own Rocky. It was shocking that it never came to be, but they said, ‘Hey, you got paid, what are you complaining about? ‘ I was furious.”

Stallone then wrote another Instagram post taking aim at Creed producer Irwin Winkler. This time, he was angered by the news of an upcoming Drago spin-off.

Stallone wrote: “After IRWIN WINKLER and FAMILY SUCK ROCKY DRY! He is presumed to be the most hated, talentless and decrepit producer in Hollywood and his dastardly sons have found their next meal…Drago? Throughout the history, so many artists in all industries, recording, painting, writing, you name it, have been destroyed by these blood suckers who have destroyed so many families, lining their pockets with other people’s work… #parasite producers # victims of exploited artists.” (sic)

The 76-year-old followed up his Instagram rant with another post, writing: “It has been my greatest privilege to have been able to create and play this meaningful character. Although it breaks my heart, sadly all things must pass… and end.” “

He added: “I love you, kind and generous people, and the most wonderful thing of all is that ROCKY will never die because he lives in you.”

Creed 3 is already in theaters.
