Conor Benn Stripped of His Boxing License After Testing Positive for Drugs

Conor Benn has been stripped of his boxing license by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) after failing a drug test ahead of his fight against Chris Eubank Jr, the organization announced. The boxer voluntarily relinquished his license after a hearing with the BBBofC on Friday, where the board said the allegations against the British boxer were “upheld”.
In a letter signed by General Secretary Robert W. Smith, the statement, released on wednesdayread: ”By notice dated October 17, 2022, the BBBofC Board summoned Mr. Conor Benn to attend a hearing to address allegations of misconduct pursuant to Rule 25.1.1.
“The hearing took place on October 21, 2022. On the morning of the hearing, Mr. Benn voluntarily relinquished his license with BBBofC.
“In accordance with its Rules and Regulations, the Board determined the allegations after the hearing in which Mr. Benn was legally represented. Allegations of misconduct against Mr. Benn were upheld.”
Benn faces allegations that he failed a drug test ahead of his fight with Chris Eubank Jr, which was due to take place on October 8 at London’s O2 Arena. The fight was called off after Benn returned a test containing an “adverse analytical finding” of traces of a fertility drug, clomiphene.
Fertility drug is primarily used to treat infertility in women who do not ovulate. But when used by men, it can act as a testosterone booster and masking drug, banned in all mainstream sports.
The British Boxing Board of Control announced that the matchup was “banned as it is not in the interest of boxing,” after promoters Matchroom Boxing and Wasserman Boxing issued a joint statement earlier in the day announcing the fight would go ahead. as scheduled.
Earlier this month, the 26-year-old son of former professional boxer Nigel Benn was charged with a second failed drug test for the same banned substance.
Benn responded with a post on Instagram, apparently denying the allegations: “I hope the apology is as strong as the disrespect,” he wrote.
UK Anti-Doping is currently under investigation for the alleged positive test as they have a duty to investigate any doping case involving an infringement by a boxer licensed by the BBBOC, which is under their jurisdiction.
If Benn is found guilty of an anti-doping violation, he could receive a suspension of up to four years.
