Compare that to Ousmane Dembele, a player at the top of his game with Barcelona who Chelsea chased for much of the summer, only to decide not to sign, and there can be a noticeable sense of regret involved. The 25-year-old scored one and created an assist hat-trick in Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing of Athletic Bilbao to cap off a strong individual performance.
Not only have Chelsea shelled out a large sum for a player whose best years may be behind them, they spurned a figure of Dembélé’s ability when he was available on a free transfer. Considering his 11 goals in 15 games this season with four goals and seven assists, that appears to have been a misjudgment by the club’s hiring team.
Potter can have faith that Sterling will prove himself worth his weight in gold in the near future. But other players like Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku were ruled out after struggling to score goals, and Chelsea’s patience could soon run out if their goalscoring woes continue.
