Chelsea boss Graham Potter may save transfer funds with ‘Van Dijk himself’

Chelsea boss Graham Potter may save millions in the back after Trevoh Chalobah’s impressive and unexpected comeback at Stamford Bridge. The versatile 23-year-old centre-back enjoyed a flashy campaign under Thomas Tuchel last season but was soon sidelined following the sacks of Kalidou Koulibaly and Wesley Fofana from Napoli and Leicester respectively this summer.

Chalobah was on the brink of leaving west London ahead of the 2022/23 season when RB Leipzig, AC Milan and Inter Milan showed keen interest in a loan move.

But Tuchel, who lost his job in early September, wanted to keep the Chelsea academy graduate, despite acknowledging he was unlikely to feature in the club’s starting eleven.

Fortunately for Chalobah, he has now been given the opportunity to show his quality and it is an opportunity he has seized with both hands.

He was Chelsea’s man of the match in Saturday’s hard-fought 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, displaying his excellent positioning and reading of the game.

Chalobah scored an impressive effort from distance that day as Chelsea comfortably dispatched Crystal Palace and there is now a feeling that he could have a big future at Stamford Bridge, despite the uncertainty this summer.

Chelsea are expected to re-enter the transfer window for further reinforcements in January, but Chalobah has certainly alleviated any need for another centre-back.

In many ways, Potter could be the perfect coach to help the 23-year-old reach his potential in West London.

The former Brighton boss has wiped the slate clean from all players and his history at Amex suggests he prioritizes player development.

The Blues are likely no longer considering transfer approaches for Chalobah and that’s a testament to their attitude and desire to turn things around.

Apparently his patience has now paid off and his place in the team is now his to lose after a string of impressive displays.

With Southgate set to play a back-three at the World Cup, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be considered a wildcard pick for Qatar.

Chelsea are under no illusions that they could play a major role in Todd Boehly’s project moving forward.
