Casemiro out of this world as Man Utd trio stand out in Chelsea draw

Manchester United fell short of consecutive Premier League wins but managed to draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Erik ten Hag’s side had gone into the match full of confidence after beating Tottenham last time out but, despite being the better team, they were unable to take all three points; instead, he took just one after a late goal from Casemiro canceled out a penalty shot. by Jorginho. Express Sport will now take a look at four players who stood out above the rest on a day in which they failed to overtake their rivals in the league table, with their No 18 coming to their rescue.

Manchester United, until this summer, had been crying out for an elite midfielder capable of both dictating games and getting stuck.

After his last stirring performance against Chelsea, it’s clear the Red Devils have landed the right man in Casemiro.

Many were surprised when United opted to spend £70m on the Brazil international, especially considering they had previously been chasing Frenkie de Jong, who is five years his junior.

But Casemiro set the tone for another positive performance from the visitors, attacking superbly and helping to give the club’s attacking players license to advance.

Real Madrid swindled United by selling Angel Di Maria in the summer transfer window, but Casemiro, another South American, is an entirely different case. What’s more, he will only get better and better as he gets used to life at his new club, and his late goal was the icing on the cake.

Another player United signed in the summer transfer window was Antony, with the Samba star landing from Ajax for £86m.

He showed a harrowing figure during the match with Chelsea, trading barbs with Diogo Dalot and often looking to Ten Hag for guidance on the touchline.

But, in the first half at least, Antony was arguably United’s biggest attacking threat with his speed causing all sorts of problems for the Blues at the back.

So good was the 22-year-old that he even forced Chelsea into an early substitution, with Marc Cucurella making way for Mateo Kovacic as they looked to tighten things up at the back.

Antony should have scored when he went heads-up with Kepa and it’s clear his right foot needs improvement. The left of him, however, is capable of imagination and that bodes well for the future.

rafael varan

United have had to be patient with Raphael Varane as injuries often prevent the former Real Madrid star from taking to the pitch as often as he would like.

But it’s clear the French international’s wait has been worth it after another stellar performance as a centre-back.

Varane showed great awareness to intercept a threatening cross from Chelsea in the first half, while also carrying the ball well and initiating United’s attacks.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may not be the same force of nature he was during his spells at Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, but keeping him quiet is still no easy task, especially given that he has rediscovered his mojo of late.

Lisandro Martinez also deserves a mention, but it was Varane who stood out today, both literally and figuratively. It is a shame that he was forced to leave the game due to injury, as his fitness problems are the only blemish on his record, and United lost him in the closing stages, as he granted late.

Diogo Dalot

At the moment, Diogo Dalot’s long-term future at the club is up in the air.

Barcelona are interested in signing the Portuguese international, while Real Madrid and AC Milan have also been linked as he enters the final 18 months of his contract.

But Dalot produced another impressive performance at right back, managing to nullify the threat of Raheem Sterling and ensuring that Chelsea’s front row had no joy. He, too, would have kept a clean sheet had Scott McTominay not conceded the late penalty that Jorginho converted.

A new contract for the former Porto star must be a priority for United, with Dalot regularly bombing forward with glee and stretching Chelsea with his pace.

He has completely transformed from the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer era and the time when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was a potential pick is long gone.

Manchester United’s next five games

Three days later, on October 30, they will host West Ham at Old Trafford.

And they will face the same opponents four days later in the Carabao Cup.
