Captain America’s Brutal Fight Scene Was ‘Real’

Later today at 10:35pm, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is coming to BBC One. This is the second solo movie for Chris Evans’ Marvel hero and kicked off the end of SHIELD in the MCU. Steve Rogers’ worst moments came when he was attacked by his former team in an elevator, led by a man who would later become supervillain Crossbones. However, to make this scene as perfect as possible, the actors were tasked with constructing a fight scene that was more intense than initially imagined.

Brock Rumlow was played by Frank Grillo in the film, before reprising his role in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Grillo recalled the most iconic fight scene from The Winter Soldier – the one that took place in the glass elevator at SHIELD HQ. He looked back: “Yeah, we trained a lot and then that day I realized that we needed to really hit each other.” The American actor blamed the elevator for being “so cramped,” meaning his action sequence had to be sped up.

The brutal fight scene ended up forcing them to escalate things even more and almost go too far. At the end of the seven-day shoot, Grillo revealed that both he and Captain America actor Evans were a bit worse off.

Grillo also praised the dedication Marvel had in bringing the film to life.

He said: “You’re there a long time, even if you’re not in the movie for a long time. Even when I appeared for a minute in [Avengers] Endgame I was in Atlanta for two weeks! What happens with movies like that, even if you’re a little bit in them, it’s shocking. Because you know those movies are the most popular in the world.”

Grillo’s role in the Captain America franchise ended in Civil War after he was killed during the battle against Wanda Maximoff. He returned for a cameo in Endgame, but has since withdrawn from the franchise.

The next film in the series, Captain America: New World Order, is set to hit theaters in 2024, but it has an all-new actor taking on the role of America’s Greatest.

Anthony Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, is now the new and improved Captain America, following the Disney Plus series Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

At the moment though, even he isn’t sure what will happen in the movie.

He noted last year: “I literally found out about it yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, cool cat, was like, ‘Hey, man. Is this real?’ [holds up a phone] I’m like, ‘I haven’t heard anything.’ That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you and say: ‘Come to Los Angeles, we want to tell you what is happening.’ So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything.” He added: “What would be really bad is if the movie [Captain America 4] starts and I’m flying out of the sky.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier and every other Marvel movie is available to watch on Disney Plus now.
