Burnley and Blackburn stars crouch as fireworks explode on the pitch

Burnley and Blackburn players were forced to duck as fireworks exploded onto the pitch at the end of their East Lancashire derby clash. Burnley were leading 3-0 with just seconds to go when fans began to set off fireworks off the pitch. However, some of them landed on the lawn and didn’t explode until they hit the lawn.

Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric and Blackburn striker Ben Brereton Diaz had to duck as pyrotechnics fell on the ground. Small flashes and explosions made players jump before plumes of smoke filled the air.

Clarets fans were jubilant as Vincent Kompany’s side returned to the top of the Championship table thanks to two goals from Ashley Barnes, which came on either side of Anass Zaroury’s effort. Burnley are looking to return to the Premier League for the first time after relegation last term. They are three points above Sheffield United at the top, having lost just two of their 21 league games.

Former Burnley midfielder Paul Weller is delighted with the transformation of his former club under Kompany. He told BBC Radio Lancashire: “Burnley should be at the top of the table and they should be further up the table, they’ve been brilliant all season.

“There have been times where teams have scored late draws against them but Vincent Kompany will be very happy they are doing so well and scoring points. Teams are scared to come to Turf Moor.”

He added: “Burnley felt comfortable in the second period and put pressure all over the park. Blackburn’s game plan felt wrong to me, playing from behind, and they made it too easy for Burnley.”

Former Blackburn striker Kevin Gallacher fears the Rovers players are not good enough to play in the style that manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is trying to implement.

He explained: “Blackburn is more of an attacking side, it’s better to test teams because they can score goals.

“But when they sit down, they shoot themselves in the foot. The players aren’t good enough yet to play the perfect game.”

“Today Blackburn couldn’t keep the ball and they couldn’t take the ball away from Burnley. The management have to stand up and be counted on for that performance.”
