Brazilian Grand Prix updates LIVE as Russell leads from Hamilton
The 2022 season is almost over and this weekend will be the penultimate race of the year. And if Saturday’s sprint race is any good, the Brazilian Grand Prix is set to provide fireworks.
Max Verstappen was the heavy favorite to maintain his impressive sprint record, but struggled on the medium compound with Mercedes finally able to battle Red Bull on track. George Russell was involved in a brilliant wheel-to-wheel battle with the 2022 F1 champion before getting the better of him and taking the checkered flag.
And with Carlos Sainz receiving a five-place grid penalty for taking a sixth ICE drive of the year, Lewis Hamilton will start today’s race behind his teammate on the front row. It is the first time this year that Mercedes have started a Sunday race on the front row together and they are looking forward to finally taking their elusive victory.
Hamilton’s position was under threat, along with Daniel Ricciardo and Zhou Guanyu, with the trio being investigated by race stewards for not being in the correct starting position on the starting grid for the sprint race. But they escaped punishment with the race stewards agreeing that visibility of the grid boxes was difficult as they were smaller than usual.
