Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus is the club’s own version of Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne, Ray Parlor told Express Sport. The Brazil international joined from Manchester City in the summer. And he’s been in impressive form ever since, propelling the Gunners to the top of the Premier League table.
Arsenal knew they needed a new striker in the summer, having opted not to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following his move to Barcelona in January.
And although they were linked to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Alexander Isak, it was Jesus who came in their place.
Arsenal spent a fee close to £45m on the Brazil international, with only Aubameyang, Ben White, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe costing more in the club’s entire history.
It has been an instant success story though, with Jesus shining for Arsenal and rocketing them to the top of the league table.
And Gunners legend Parlour, speaking exclusively to Express Sport, has expressed his belief that he is like the club’s own De Bruyne and Aguero because of how important he is.
“Probably if they win the league!” he said when asked if City would regret letting Jesus pass their rivals.
“It all comes down to what they earn and Jesus was a different type of player for them.
“He was not the main man, he always had other players around him like Agüero and De Bruyne. But at Arsenal now he is such an important player.”
“He’s probably as important to them as De Bruyne and Aguero were to City.
“I think he really took that on his shoulders and really enjoys being the main man. He knows he’s going to be the main man, playing every week.”
“I think he brings a lot to the dressing room as well. He’s a lively character, I was there in pre-season and he was very upbeat and positive.”
“So I’m sure it conveys that to the other players, which is really important.”
Another player Arsenal attacked City for in the summer transfer window was Oleksandr Zinchenko.
It was a deal that surprised many, especially as the Ukraine international was such a useful player for the reigning Premier League champions during his time at the Etihad.
And Parlor was also impressed by the 25-year-old, despite injuries restricting him to just seven league appearances so far this term.
“I just think there’s a very good spirit right now,” he added.
“Obviously Jesus and Zinchenko have been two great signings for the club.
“They know how to win trophies and Gabriel Martinelli has always been upbeat. [as well]I needed that streak in the team.
“Some players are just waiting for their chance, he’s been patient with a couple of injuries and had to bide his time, especially with Emile Smith-Rowe standing out.
“But now that he’s joined the team he’s been incredible, he’s been brilliant.
“His work rate, you can tell he loves football. I went to pre-season with Arsenal and you can tell he loves training, he loves kicking a ball.
“Jesus, he brings a lot to the team even though he hasn’t scored in nine games. His work rate, his link game has been excellent, sometimes he falls deep.
“He’s probably not a number 9, but he’s brought a lot to the team and all Arsenal fans will be delighted with their transfer window, with Jesus and Zinchenko they’ve signed two great players there.”
For Jesus, the Arsenal star will now aim to propel Brazil to World Cup glory.
And Parlor believes they are the favourites, with the Gunners icon adding: “When you look at the team and some of the players that were lost, I have to go with Brazil.
“There is not much preparation, as we all know because we have just come out of domestic football, you have to look at the best squad and the best players.
“If you look at the Brazil squad, I think they are pretty perfect all over the pitch.
“I think there are always a couple of surprises, I don’t know who they will be, and if I was putting my money in I would probably go with Brazil.”
