Arsenal and Chelsea stadiums rejected in UK and Ireland Euro 2028 plan

Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge were among the high-profile absentees when the United Kingdom and Ireland submitted their bid to host Euro 2028 on Wednesday. Fourteen host stadiums have been shortlisted in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, but there was no room for some of the Premier League’s most iconic grounds.

A final list of 10 host stadiums will be sent to UEFA in April 2023, but 14 have been the first shortlisted as the UK and Ireland speed up their attempts to stage the grand showcase in six years. But the Emirates, Stamford Bridge and the iconic home of Liverpool, Anfield, will not be in the tournament.

Instead, Everton supporters will enjoy bragging rights over their bitter Merseyside rivals, with their new stadium, currently under construction, selected instead. State-of-the-art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is also included, as is its north London neighbour, Wembley Stadium, which hosted the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy.

Villa Park, London Stadium, Etihad Stadium, St. James’ Park, Stadium of Light, Old Trafford, Aviva Arena, Croke Park, Casement Park Stadium, Hampden Park and Principality Stadium make up the shortlist. The bid dossier is set to use the slogan ‘Football for all. Football for good. Football for the future’.

“The UK and Ireland’s track record of hosting successful sporting events over many decades means we have the knowledge and experience to take this world-class tournament to new heights.”

After the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Germany will host Euro 2024 in 10 different cities: Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen. The 2026 World Cup in the United States and Canada will follow before the United Kingdom and Ireland hope to host Euro 2028.
