Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania first reactions ‘Big Star Wars vibes’

The first of three Marvel movies to be released in 2023 hits theaters next week, in a blockbuster that kicks off Phase 5 of the MCU. The Thanos-level villain from The Multiverse Saga, Kang the Conqueror, makes his debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and critics can’t get enough of his performance. Check out the first reactions to Paul Rudd’s new movie from the world premiere last night.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is really weird, but apparently that’s a good thing

There comes a point where all franchises have to get weird, and the MCU has done exactly that with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Like all of his other roles, Jonathan Majors remains endlessly fascinating. MODOK, David Dastmalchian’s new character and composer Christophe Beck also stand out.

Quantumania tells a tight story that balances humor with heart and manages to be one of the weirdest MCU movies to date. I like the weird and I was surprised at how much I liked what MODOK brought to the table. Bring on the rare! While I wish I had the chance to reunite with other Ant-Man favorites, Jonathan Majors has left his mark on the MCU as a force to be reckoned with. Thanos is tame compared to what lies ahead. The Kang Dynasty has begun! I’ll say one more thing before I wrap up the night, thematically, Quantumania definitely ties back to the first Ant-Man movie in a meaningful way. At the end of the day, there’s nothing Scott Lang wouldn’t do for Cassie.”

Quantumania is definitely the weirdest Marvel movie yet… but that’s a good thing! It leans heavily towards the sci-fi side of the MCU, taking a lot of wild swings. It doesn’t all land, but it’s fun, witty, and funny. A fun and bizarre journey into the quantum realm.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may be too complicated for the casual Marvel fan

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has so much going on, it’s hard to connect emotionally with any of it. Jonathan Majors’ Kang is a charismatic, intense and visually stunning baddie, but the threat he represents is too abstract.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania… trying to imagine a Marvel newbie, “one ticket please,” then gets two hours of variants and multiverse talk. Jonathan Majors is great as Kang and for a good part of the movie, Michelle Pfeiffer is the main character, which is amazing. They found the perfect actor in Majors for Kang, and we’re going to have a LOT of Kang, but I’m not entirely sure, “think Thanos was bad? Meet Kang!” strategy. He’s fun here, but being the bad guy? in multiple projects?

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania hits theaters on February 14, 2023.
